Zlatá Koruna Monastery

A Cistercian monastery founded by King Ottokar II in 1263. You can even cycle here through the forest.

The Cistercian monastery of Zlatá Koruna (Golden Crown) was founded in 1263 by the Bohemian King Ottokar II. It was originally called the Holy Crown after a relic – a thorn from the Crown of Thorns – which the king received from the French King Louis IX (Saint Louis).

The monastery was meant to strengthen royal influence in South Bohemia against the powerful Vítkovec family. Today it is a national cultural monument and one of the most valuable Gothic complexes in the country. You can cycle here from the guesthouse through the forest.
